What to expect in a counselling session
Counselling isn’t about being told what to do, it’s about being in a safe, calm space to slow down, make sense of your feelings and begin to understand what’s really happening beneath the surface. Together, we’ll explore your thoughts, expectations, emotions, and choices at a pace that feels right for you.
Each session gives you the time to talk openly. I may offer my reflections or gentle guidance, always with respect for your perspective. Over time, counselling can help you feel clearer, more in control, and better equipped to handle life’s challenges.
Starting therapy/counselling can feel daunting, particularly if you’ve been carrying things on your own for a long time. You don’t need to know exactly what you want to say or where to begin. Often, the first step is simply having a conversation and seeing whether the space feels right for you. Some people may want to talk a lot, whilst others will take their time and may have quiet moments. There is no pressure either way.
You don’t need to arrive with everything neatly explained. Many people begin therapy simply knowing that something doesn’t feel right, and we can work together to gently make sense of it.
I offer a free 15-minute consultation either over a phone call or a teams call, so that you can see how I work, we can chat through your therapeutic needs and discuss how I can support you. There’s no pressure or obligation, just an opportunity to ask questions and get a feel for whether I’m the right therapist for you.

What actually happens in a session:
- Once we have had our introduction phone/Teams call and you are happy to go ahead with counselling, we will arrange our first session at a time and date that works well for us both.
- We meet in a calm, confidential space, either in person or online.
- You share what’s on your mind at your own pace.
- We explore patterns, feelings, and behaviours to uncover insights.
- We'll discuss practical strategies to manage stress, emotions, or challenges.
- All sessions are flexible and tailored to your needs and goals.
